    Great video. After you sand it make sure to cover it with something like Cerekote trim coat or something. Then it will be protected from UV damaged for a good year. Just do coating once a year or so from then on out. I want to try this on a jeep bumper. might not be doable as the bumper is a little bit textured

      Time is money $$$ MIG is about twice as fast as TIG and you end up with the same result in the end. TIG will give you much more control over heat input but its not needed for this repair.

    Quick question for you on my MiG yes welder like your blue one. I tried using flux core for the same reasons you indicated. However, in gasless mode, it would only give me the .035 wire size and would not go below 80 volts. That turned out to be too hot for the thin sheet metal I was welding too. Does your welder allow you to use .030 wire?

    @brandon, I am wondering what was being done wrong other then settings when that wels was done? Now i am not far into the video, and do not have much aluminum experience at all so this maybw a newb question (aka dumb question). Both pieces have majority overlap, so how does a weld get into the top piece pretty well but not even begin to melt into the bottom piece?

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund 2 дні тому

      Great question! The top piece is an edge so it melts much easier than the flat plate it was welded to. The way to correct this is increase the amperage and focus the weld more onto the flat plate than onto the top plate.

    Good work Brandon. My Son-in-law and daughter gave me a spool gun for Christmas, and your video along with others has helped me recognize a good aluminum weld. I haven't used it a whole lot, and my practice has been with 1/8 inch coupons, and my welds have been all over the place as far as quality. It helps a lot to know how you vary your settings, to get a good weld. I just need more practice. Thanks for your time and effort in these videos.

    Great video, as always! That original weld sure did NOT do the job. Was it just not enough heat/current/volts to penetrate as yours did??? One question....you used the band saw that you use for steel. Was it not necessary to change the blade for just aluminum??? I know you use brushes and grinders for just aluminum, so I was wondering about the band saw blade. I tried to cut aluminum with a hand hacksaw and the metal clogged up the teeth on the blade. Be well, be safe, and most of all, be Blessed!!!

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund 2 дні тому

      Thanks Jim and great question. My bandsaw blade is pretty coarse so it doesn't clog up as easy. Any contamination from the blade, I removed when I used the dedicated grinding tools. Great question! God bless brother!

    Don't know about that one, but the plug-in-pins on my gate leaves too much room and the gate has, at least, a 1/2" clanking, especially when on bumpy/gravel roads, it literally has started to rip the weld apart on the gates plate, just like the one you're working on, but no rust at all... will a sand and quick stick weld lock it, hold, or will the current weld just collapse/melt away? The whole weld all the way around is not broke, just about half.

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund 4 дні тому

      Once it starts cracking it will just continue to spread unless you grind out the crack and then weld right back over it

    • @malachi-
      @malachi- 4 дні тому

      @@BrandonLund I'll give it a try, but probably going to drill a couple bolts through, too... and I can tell others, if that gate is flapping forward and backward a lot, make sure to add some washers, or something to secure it more firmly with the pins. Thanks for the follow up, much appreciated.

    I do get asked often times how much I charge the customer especially for welding aluminum. People know that tig welding Al is a little bit expensive than mig welding or stick. I don't charge by centimeter of weld. I always charge what I think would be fair enough for me and the customer, and never had problems to be too expensive for people.Ex: I weld a 5 cm cracked alloy rim for 20 euros or less. If I have 2 cracks on same rim I charge 30 euro only instead of 40 euro to make a good price. When I have a big repair I'm going to evaluate the consumables and my time, and then make a price.

      Congratulations! Plasma cutters are very handy! It's been a while, so I don't actually remember what I charged. I would say about 2 hours labor, so probably around $160

    Brandon your tip was on the money, was drilling a 2 1/4 hole for a deadbolt lock cylinder when I felt the pop you describe. I finished the hole and of course the arbor adapter pins popped out of the hole saw. I tried using flat files, with vice grips with socket wrenches, rags with channel locks,nothing worked. Your video was one of the top hits and your instructions worked perfect. It took mee 3 times of the gentle tapping you demonstrated to loosen the arbor adaptor. Thanks for a great dyi tip, which save my Klein tools key hole tools!

      Thats awesome! I love hearing these success stories because I know how frustrating it can be trying to remove them. Until I learned this trick, I destroyed a couple using pipe wrenches and a vice.
